My first two weeks in Tucson

Snow on the Santa Catalina Mountians looking north from a park near my place

January in Tucson

Garner Canyon Off-Highway Vehilce area
went for a 3-1/2 solo mountain bike ride in January
Gardner Canyon is south of Tucson about an hour

Remember, think BABEL….. The entry below is from an update emailed to a friend, January 15th, which was, at the time, about my recent move (Jan 5th) to Tucson from Gilbert (near Phoenix, where most of my family lives)….

Settled into my rental-a-room in a house in Tucson. It is working out quite well; the lady I am renting from is really accommodating and is making my stay here pleasant one. As pleasant as it can be moving from a nice sized 2-bedroom apartment, by myself, to a room with a small bathroom attached…. But, I am very centrally located near the corner of Campbell and Grant just a mile north of the U of A campus.

Not working yet, but had three interviews last week and have one third interview tomorrow, which will more than likely lead to an offer as a "coach"/supervisor with a telemarketing company that takes inbound customer support calls for Verizon and at the same time up sells other Verizon products. Thinking that this will be a temporary to get some money coming in until I can get a more substantial job with a title company as a sales rep. I have to make some calls tomorrow morning to two different title insurance companies about setting up second interviews, one of which looks like the second interview will include an offer to be a commercial title rep for them, but it is the other company, needing a residential title rep, that will probably take two more interviews before I see an offer, that I am most interested in at this point. More on that later!

Really cool thing happened with the whole job hunt thing, was making my first stop at a title company to start spreading my resumes around, and to find out who I should talk to at each company regarding employment, the first place I stopped was a company that was out of biz, but there was a title rep from another company there in the courtyard of the building, talking on his cell phone. I decided to wait till he was done to ask him what happened to that title company, forgot to say, he was the one that told me they were out of biz. So, told him my whole deal and he is like, here, lemmie give you all the names and numbers (some cell numbers) for all the people who do the hiring for title companies in town. Dude, talk about God setting me up! So, I leave that guy, after thanking him profusely, and head on to my next stop, with contact name in hand.... and I start having trouble with bronco, I had thought earlier that I needed a new battery, cause it was acting up the day before, so I head directly over to Checker to get a battery but don’t make it, it dies, so rather than get mad, I start calling all the people that title rep gave me, about jobs....... Let the truck cool down, get it started again, head to the checker to get the battery...... well, within in an hour and a half, two people have called me back and I have two interviews setup for the next two days, and within 3 hours I have a total of 3 interviews.... pretty cool huh, thanks God. This whole time, I was thinking that with the bronco acting up that I wouldn’t be able to get around to find a job, and didn’t need to after all, all I needed to do just came to me!

Have been to a few churches, thought I had found one and when I went the second time I felt like it was a bit cheesy, so I am not so sure now, still a few more to check out, more later.

Took a great 5 mile hike last night, started at about 4:45 pm, hiked for a hour, about 2.5 miles into Ventana Canyon Park, before turning around, at this point in the dark and hiking out of this totally, dark canyon for another hour and 10 mins, a bit slower going in the dark with my petzel headlamp. I must admit I thought a couple of times, gosh, I hope there are no cougars up here to eat me! But alas, there were none, good thing, cause it would have been totally pissed if one had eaten me, or even bit me!

Oh, and the bronco was having some probs again last week until I found I had a alternator prob and had a new one installed.... all’s good now.

Have no radio, other than the truck and no TV, have been renting movies and watching them on the computer for the last three night, pretty cool.....life is good

Glad I moved here, really enjoying it.

The Catalyst

Well here I sit, in one of new favorite places, notice I said ONE of my new favorite places, the Trident Grill (Trident Grill is named after the special warfare insignia worn by all Navy SEALs), near the U of A campus, being served a pint of Newcastle by Ashley, my attentive server. List of reasons why I like the Trident so much: 1) Free Wireless Internet, 2) Friendly staff and patrons, 3) Many great beers on tap and the 4th & Top Reason) Owned and operated by Nelson Miller, retired US Navy SEAL and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is one of the Naval Special Warfare guys who personally carried prisoner of war, Private Jessica Lynch, US Army, from the building where she was being held, during her rescue from her Iraqi captors. In Webster's Dictionary next to the word "Bad Ass" I am sure there is a picture of Nelson! I usually come here to do some online banking, check my webmail, grab some food, and oh yeah, to have a few beers. The only way it could be any better is if I had a one of my bestest LA buddies here to share a beer and some fish and chips with... bro, you know who you are!

So, the reason for this posting, my first ever, is to lay the some of the background which caused my to move to Arizona. The posting and probably all of the future postings will be a bit "Momento" or "BABEL" style, which means it will look back over time, but may (read = will) jump around a bit chronologically too, which may not surprise you, if you know me and my detailed story telling style.

After watching "Stranger Than Fiction" a few weeks back, I realized that for about the last 4 years I have been living in a "Tragedy" as in Tragedy vs. Comedy as Dustin Hoffman's character talks about in the movie. I mean that half jokingly, which of course means, I'm half serious too. The gist of it is, that it seems that nearly everything I have pursued or tried over the last 4 years, has fallen at my feet/been denied me/didn't work out/didn't happen or as I have since realized, were all my plans for me, but clearly not God's plans for me. As I was relating to a good friend recently, I was really beginning to wonder if I had lost all ability to discern what God had for me and my future. The relational piece is a part of it but the bigger part is the vocational thing, that has been the hardest part for me, to not feel a sense of connection in.....

The list of things that didn't work out is long and painful, but not so much now, but very much so as I was going thru it. Thankfully now I have learned to look at it more like a true prophet of our generation once said "Sometimes I Thank God For Unanswered Prayers".

Well, back to the list from last 4 years:
Applied for FBI (2 month process) - "You're too old"
Accepted to Border Patrol (3 month process) - "Failed oral interview"
Met/Dated/Engaged (1-1/2 yrs process) - "Not the right thing"
Job change for "opportunity" in escrow (2 yrs process) - "Opportunity..... NOT!!!!"
Applied for Naval OCS/Naval Intel (grueling 5 month process) - "Sorry, you weren't selected"

AAAHHHHHHGGGGGGG

This is the point where I ran out of ideas.....

But, alas, things have started to turn around!

Stay tuned for more story and pictures to come....
